Kearney Council celebrates community achievements and addresses parking lottery process

The Kearny City Council meeting on March 25, 2025, highlighted several key initiatives and community recognitions. Councilwoman Castro opened the session by congratulating local public safety leaders, including Fire Captain Jeremy Ho and Police Captains Kevin Aronson and Christopher Levcheck, for their service.

A significant topic discussed was the Sanford Avenue parking lottery, which received 16 applications for 21 available spaces. The council is currently verifying the applications to ensure proper residency and vehicle registration before designating the parking spaces to the applicants.

In recognition of International Women's Day, Castro reported on two events held in March that celebrated women's contributions and aimed to inspire future generations. She announced that Patricia Sherwin has been selected as Kearny's Woman of the Year, with a resolution to be presented at an upcoming event on March 27 in Jersey City.

The meeting also addressed a recent groundbreaking ceremony funded by a $1.3 million Federal Community Development Block Grant. This funding will support improvements in a much-needed area that includes the Washington School and services for senior residents.

Additionally, the council provided updates on health initiatives, including the return of a mobile mammogram screening unit scheduled for April 25. This service is available to women aged 40 and older who have not had a mammogram in over a year.

Lastly, the council discussed the implementation of a new park mobile system, with an estimated rollout timeframe of 8 to 12 weeks. The meeting underscored the council's commitment to community engagement and public health initiatives, as well as ongoing improvements in local infrastructure.
