City Council advances $123M budget for public hearing on May 13

Washington County's Board of County Commissioners has approved a significant budget increase for the Board of Education, raising funding by $13 million for the upcoming fiscal year. This marks an 11.5% increase, bringing the total budget allocation to approximately $123 million.

During the meeting, officials noted that while the overall budget has grown, the percentage of the budget dedicated to education has decreased. This discrepancy highlights a growing concern that funding is not keeping pace with revenue growth and inflation rates.

Commissioners reached a consensus to move forward with the proposed budget, setting the stage for public hearings scheduled for May 6, where residents can voice their opinions on rate and fee changes related to water quality, solid waste, and airport services. A separate public hearing for the budget will take place on May 13 at 6 PM at the Public Safety Training Center.
