Phoenix celebrates Japanese Friendship Garden's cultural ties with Himeji

The Japanese Friendship Garden, known as Rohoen, is a hidden gem in Downtown Phoenix, spanning 3.5 acres at Latham and Third Avenue. Established in the mid-1990s, this serene space is a product of Phoenix's sister city relationship with Himeji, Japan. The name Rohoen reflects its cultural roots: "Ro" means heron, symbolizing Himeji, "Ho" stands for Phoenix bird, and "En" translates to garden.

Since its first phase opened in 1996, with the full garden debuting in 2002, Rohoen has become a vibrant hub for cultural events. Visitors can engage in a variety of activities, including traditional tea ceremonies, weddings, workshops, and lessons in dance and music. This garden not only showcases Japanese culture but also fosters community connections, making it a significant landmark in Phoenix.
