Local school expands vocational training to include automotive and healthcare programs

Marshall Public Schools is set to enhance its vocational training programs following discussions at the recent Board Meeting held on May 5, 2025. The board emphasized the importance of exposing students to hands-on experiences in automotive and medical fields, aiming to better prepare them for future careers.

One of the key highlights was the automotive program, which currently engages students in practical projects, including engine disassembly and maintenance tasks. However, the program may face restructuring due to time constraints and the need to expand into other areas, such as small engines and powersports. The board noted that while there are currently 30 students enrolled, adjustments may be necessary to accommodate a broader curriculum that includes diesel mechanics in the future.

In the medical training sector, the board announced plans to integrate medical terminology and careers courses into the Career and Technical Institute (CTI). This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, which could allow the school to recoup 35% of funding for these courses. The board highlighted a new partnership with Avera Health, enabling students to gain field experience locally, which is expected to enhance their training and spark interest in medical careers.

The meeting also addressed the pressing need for skilled tradespeople, noting a significant deficit in professions such as plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry. The board's commitment to expanding vocational training reflects a proactive approach to addressing workforce shortages and equipping students with essential skills for the job market.
