North Smithfield Council approves updated Hazard Mitigation and Flood Management Plan

In a significant step towards enhancing community safety, the North Smithfield Town Council has approved the updated Hazard Mitigation and Flood Management Plan, which is now ready for submission to FEMA. This plan, which is essential for securing federal disaster funds, aims to protect public health and safety while minimizing the risks associated with various hazards, including flooding and severe storms.

The updated plan, which has been in development for nine months, involved collaboration among multiple town departments, including planning, public works, and emergency management. A consultant from VHB facilitated the process, which included monthly meetings and a survey of local residents to gather input on potential hazards. The plan outlines 14 different hazards, detailing their locations, potential impacts, and necessary mitigation actions.

The town received a grant of $45,100 from the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RHEMA) to support this initiative, with a local match of $4,500 provided through in-kind services. To date, approximately $26,600 has been spent on consulting services, which will be reimbursed once the plan is officially approved by FEMA.

Council members emphasized the importance of this plan not only for immediate disaster response but also for long-term community resilience. The council will continue to monitor the plan's implementation, with recommendations to meet biannually to ensure that identified actions are being followed through and that the plan remains integrated into other town planning documents.

This proactive approach to hazard mitigation reflects North Smithfield's commitment to safeguarding its residents and infrastructure against future disasters, ensuring that the community is better prepared for any challenges that may arise.
