City Planners Propose Innovative Energy Solutions for New Light Industrial Development

During the recent City Council Study Session on May 5, 2025, Northglenn officials discussed innovative plans for sustainable development in the city. The proposed concepts focus on integrating energy-efficient utilities, including rooftop solar panels, solar carports, and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, into new industrial developments.

The first concept plan outlines the use of 294 acres for light industrial purposes and 57 acres for flex industrial spaces. This design aims to create a more visually appealing urban landscape by incorporating smaller buildings along major roadways, which helps to break up the mass of larger industrial structures. As development progresses northward, larger warehouses and industrial buildings will be introduced, enhancing the area's economic potential.

A significant aspect of the discussion centered on sustainability. The plans allow for energy utilities to be creatively integrated throughout the development, making it easier for builders to include solar energy solutions in their designs. This proactive approach is particularly beneficial as it applies to new constructions rather than retrofitting existing buildings.

The second concept plan suggests a slight increase in light industrial space, totaling 335 acres, and designates a specific area for a solar field. This dedicated space for solar energy production reflects the city’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainability.

Council members were invited to provide guidance on these concepts, particularly regarding the integration of energy utilities and the overall layout of the proposed developments. The discussions highlighted Northglenn's focus on balancing industrial growth with environmental responsibility, aiming to create a sustainable future for its residents.
