Residents oppose Palo Alto Commons expansion citing parking and privacy concerns

During the recent Palo Alto City Council meeting on May 5, 2025, residents voiced significant concerns regarding the parking situation and proposed expansion of the Palo Alto Commons, a senior living facility. The discussions highlighted the challenges faced by visitors and neighbors, emphasizing the need for improved infrastructure to support the community.

One resident, who frequently visits the Palo Alto Commons, described the ongoing struggle to find parking in the visitor lot, which often lacks available spaces due to construction materials and reserved spots for future residents. This situation forces visitors to park on nearby streets, such as Wilkie Way, leading to tensions with local residents who feel their neighborhood is being used as an overflow parking area. The absence of handicap parking spaces further complicates access for those with mobility impairments, impacting the well-being of residents who rely on visits from family and friends.

Another speaker, James Pee, a long-time Wilkie Way resident, expressed his opposition to the proposed expansion of the Palo Alto Commons. He noted that the current facility already casts significant shadows and reduces privacy for nearby homes. Pee urged the council to consider modifications to the expansion plan, suggesting that any new units should be placed at the front of the building to minimize the impact on neighboring properties.

Nia Porter, a senior at Gunn High School, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the congestion and safety hazards on local roads due to increased traffic. She emphasized that while she supports senior housing, the proposed expansion should be reconsidered to protect the interests of current residents.
