Tullahoma's Parks and Recreation Department is seeking approval to apply for a grant aimed at enhancing local recreational facilities with the proposed construction of outdoor pickleball courts at Cascade Park. During the recent Mayor's Youth Council Mock BMA Meeting on May 5, 2025, community engagement officer Lau Russell presented the initiative, emphasizing the growing popularity of pickleball as one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States.
The grant application, which requires a 50/50 match with the state of Tennessee, is intended to fund the design and construction of these courts, addressing the increasing demand for pickleball facilities in Tullahoma. Currently, the city has limited indoor spaces that double as basketball courts, leading to scheduling conflicts between basketball and pickleball players. The addition of outdoor courts is expected to alleviate these conflicts and provide more opportunities for residents of all ages to engage in this low-cost sport.

The proposed courts at Cascade Park would not only expand recreational options but also cater to the growing interest in pickleball, which has seen a surge in participation.
The council discussed the necessity of the project, with Alderman Hoffner raising questions about the target user demographic and the rationale behind the need for additional courts. Russell responded by outlining the current challenges faced by pickleball enthusiasts and the potential benefits of the new facilities.
The council is expected to vote on the grant application soon, marking a significant step towards enhancing Tullahoma's recreational offerings and supporting community engagement through sports. If approved, the project could pave the way for improved access to outdoor activities, fostering a healthier and more active community.
