The Town of Concord is making strides in its efforts to address the dredging of Warner's Pond, as discussed in the recent MCI Concord Legal & Government Affairs Subcommittee meeting on November 13, 2024. A significant development emerged regarding the disposal of dredged materials, which had previously posed challenges due to high costs associated with the initial proposal.
During the meeting, it was revealed that the original plan to deposit dredged materials on MCI property faced logistical hurdles, leading to inflated bids that exceeded the available budget of $3 million. The complexities arose from the secure nature of the MCI site, which restricted access for trucks involved in the dumping process. This situation prompted the formation of the Warner's Pond Task Force, aimed at finding more feasible solutions.
Fortunately, a new location has been identified for the disposal of dredged materials. The task force, with input from members including Jeff, has pinpointed an area between the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail and Route 2, adjacent to the pond. This site allows for a more efficient process where materials can be pumped directly from the pond, significantly reducing costs and logistical challenges.
In addition to the dredging discussions, the meeting touched on the involvement of various stakeholders, including the Department of Corrections, to ensure that all parties in the vicinity are represented in the decision-making process. The task force is also exploring alternative sites for material disposal, including a potential location at 2229 Main Street, which may require fill.
Looking ahead, the Warner's Pond Task Force will convene again tonight at 6:00 PM to further discuss the dredging proposal and the ongoing considerations regarding dam removal. While no final decision has been made about the dam, the community remains engaged in the process, highlighting the importance of collaboration in addressing local environmental concerns.
