The Concord Children's Center (CCC) is set to undergo significant renovations to its playground at 1300 Main Street, following a recent hearing by the Historic Districts Commission. The proposed changes aim to enhance safety and aesthetics for the children who use the space, which has been a community staple since CCC's founding in 1975.

Executive Director Susie Kornblum presented the application, highlighting the need for improvements due to increased usage and safety concerns. The current playground surface has become compacted and is no longer suitable for young children, leading to a mix of dirt and sand that poses safety challenges. The renovation plan includes replacing existing features with rubber and asphalt surfaces, a deck, a retaining wall, and a fence, all designed to create a safer and more inviting environment for the children.

Kornblum noted that the playground is not only used by CCC but also shared with the Concord Carousel Preschool and is accessible to all Concord residents during non-program hours. The design process involved collaboration with the town manager and the director of the Concord Carousel Preschool, ensuring that the needs of all users were considered.

Landscape Architect Jennifer Brook provided insights into the design vision, emphasizing the importance of creating an attractive and functional space that encourages imaginative outdoor play. The proposed renovations are expected to improve the overall appearance of the playground, making it a more appealing site for both children and passersby.

The commission's approval of this project marks a significant step toward enhancing community resources for families in Concord. As the CCC prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary, these improvements reflect its commitment to providing quality childcare and safe play environments for the youngest members of the community.
