Cook County task force reviews maternal health services and plans for doulas

Maternal health initiatives took center stage at the Will County Public Health & Safety Committee meeting on May 1, 2025, as members discussed the need for improved services, particularly the addition of doulas to support expectant mothers. A committee member praised the efforts of colleagues from Cook County, highlighting their excellent work in raising awareness about maternal health issues.

The discussion emphasized the absence of doula services in Will County, despite their availability in surrounding areas. The member noted, "If we could get a doula, that would be okay," indicating a strong desire to enhance maternal support through a referral system. This initiative aims to address gaps in services and improve outcomes for mothers and infants.

In addition to maternal health, the meeting featured a successful map forum that attracted over 70 participants, who helped prioritize health initiatives for the next three to five years. The committee expressed gratitude to all attendees and acknowledged the hard work of staff member Caitlin, who will soon outline the new initiatives.

The meeting also included a presentation on West Nile virus by Kyle Moy, the program coordinator of environmental health. He provided background information on the virus and discussed the county's grant program aimed at combating its spread.

As Will County continues to focus on enhancing public health services, the push for doula support and proactive measures against West Nile virus reflect a commitment to improving community health outcomes. The committee's next steps will be crucial in implementing these initiatives effectively.
