City Council approves food compost program and contract with My Green Michigan

The Eastpointe City Council held a regular meeting on April 15, 2025, where they discussed the implementation of a new food composting program aimed at enhancing local sustainability efforts. The program will provide the first 100 participants with countertop containers to facilitate food waste collection.

During the meeting, council members clarified how the composting process would work. Residents will use the provided containers to collect food waste, which they will then empty into designated collection bins. Participants have the option to use their own bins or the provided ones, and they can choose to line their bins with compostable materials or place food waste directly inside.

The council also recognized the contributions of a local advocate who has been instrumental in securing $250,000 in grant funding for the initiative. This individual has actively participated in council meetings and beautification efforts, earning appreciation from council members for their dedication.

Following the discussions, the council unanimously approved the food compost program and a one-year contract with My Green Michigan for $6,080. This contract covers the purchase of bins and the weekly collection of food waste, marking a significant step towards promoting environmental responsibility in Eastpointe. The council's decision reflects a commitment to sustainability and community engagement, setting a positive precedent for future initiatives.
