Louisiana Youth Council advocates for online safety legislation

The House Appropriations Committee of the Louisiana Legislature convened on May 6, 2025, to discuss critical legislation aimed at enhancing online safety for minors. Kakkar's testimony underscored the potential dangers of unrestricted internet access, citing alarming statistics about mental health issues among adolescents linked to excessive social media use. Following Kakkar, Brinkley Bennett, another youth representative, likened the proposed legislation to a "digital seat belt," emphasizing the need for protective measures that would allow children to explore the internet safely. Bennett argued that just as parents buckle their children in for safety during car rides, similar precautions should be taken in the digital realm to shield youth from inappropriate content and online predators.

Jared Hayden, a policy analyst from the Institute for Family Studies, also voiced support for House Bill 570, asserting that it would empower parents with the necessary tools to monitor and protect their children online. He noted that many parents are concerned about their children's safety in digital environments, and the proposed legislation aims to address these fears by establishing common-sense safeguards.
