Chandler declares May as Water Safety Month emphasizing drowning prevention education

The City of Chandler's recent study session highlighted a strong commitment to community safety and engagement, particularly through the proclamation of May as Water Safety Month. Mayor Kevin Harkett and city officials emphasized the importance of water safety education, urging residents to prioritize supervision and safety measures around water.

During the session, the mayor proclaimed May 25 as Water Safety Month, underscoring the critical role of swimming and aquatic activities in enhancing community well-being. "Adult supervision is key," Harkett stated, stressing that children should never be left unattended near water. He encouraged families to designate a "water watcher" to ensure constant vigilance.

The session also featured a call to action for residents to install proper barriers around pools and spas, such as fences with self-closing gates, and to enroll in swim lessons offered for all ages. "We need your help to keep your eyes on your children," a firefighter added, highlighting the emotional toll of water-related incidents on first responders.

In addition to the water safety proclamation, the meeting recognized the winners of the City of Chandler's car show, celebrating community spirit and engagement. Myra and Rudy Ruiz received the "Best in Show" award for their classic car, showcasing the city's vibrant culture.
