Surry County's health officials highlighted pressing community health challenges during the Board of Commissioners meeting on May 5, 2025. Ali Willard from the Surry County Health and Nutrition Center presented findings from the 2022 Community Health Assessment and the 2024 State of the County Health Report, emphasizing the critical issues of substance use, mental health, and obesity.
Willard explained that the community health assessment serves as a vital tool, not only providing statistics but also capturing the voices of residents facing health challenges. "It helps us identify the most pressing health issues in the County and shapes our strategic planning," she stated. The assessment is conducted every four years, with interim reports tracking progress on priority issues.

Willard noted, "Mental health and substance use are very big issues, and they really go hand in hand." To combat these challenges, the health department has trained educators in mental health first aid, aiming to reduce stigma and improve community responses to crises.
In recognition of their efforts, the health department received a certificate for their 2023 Community Health Improvement Plan, which has been acknowledged for its effectiveness. This award will allow them to lead workshops for other local health departments, sharing their successful strategies.
The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration among local agencies, schools, and law enforcement to address these health issues effectively. Willard concluded by inviting questions and encouraging community engagement in future assessments, highlighting the ongoing commitment to improving health outcomes in Surry County.
