Kalispell City Council considers annexation and expansion of MDT facility on Highway 93

Kalispell City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing local infrastructure by approving the annexation and zoning of a Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) facility during their meeting on May 5, 2025. The council unanimously supported the resolution for annexation, the initial zoning of the property to P-1 public, and a conditional use permit for the expansion of the MDT facility located at 2905 Highway 93 North.

The approved expansion will include a new 28,400 square foot building that will house equipment storage, mechanics, and welding shops, consolidating various MDT functions into one location. This move is expected to improve operational efficiency and service delivery for the department, which will continue to store essential materials like salt and sand at the site.

The facility's location at the intersection of Rose Crossing and Highway 93 is strategically important, as it will facilitate better traffic management and access. The extension of Quail Lane, a key component of the project, will provide a dedicated public street that aims to reduce direct access to the highway, thereby preserving traffic flow and enhancing safety. This extension will also connect to existing road networks, improving overall connectivity in the area.

In addition to the main proposal, the council discussed various conditions related to the development, including landscaping, stormwater management, and screening to buffer the facility from neighboring properties.
