The Garden City Public Schools Board of Education has taken a significant step to address teacher shortages by proposing a new Teacher Apprentice Program. During the meeting on May 5, 2025, Chief Human Resource Officer Drew Tull and HR Coordinator Leigh Anne Tone presented the program aimed at cultivating future educators from within the community.
The Teacher Apprentice Program is designed to provide aspiring teachers with hands-on experience alongside highly effective mentor teachers. Participants will receive on-the-job training while enrolled in a teacher preparation program, allowing them to earn while they learn. This initiative is particularly timely, as the district faces ongoing staffing challenges and seeks innovative solutions to attract and retain qualified educators.

Subscribe for Free Tull emphasized the program's dual purpose: to grow new teachers and to retain existing staff. "Growing our own seems to be one of the most effective ways to fill our classrooms," he stated. The program will allow apprentices to gain practical experience over a four-year period, ensuring they are well-prepared for their teaching careers.
The board plans to open five apprentice positions for the upcoming school year, with a commitment to finding the most qualified candidates. The program will also provide financial support for tuition and other educational expenses, making it more accessible for participants.
In addition to addressing staffing needs, the program aims to foster a strong teaching culture within the district. By pairing apprentices with experienced mentors, the initiative seeks to create a supportive environment that enhances the professional development of both new and veteran teachers.
The board's approval of the Teacher Apprentice Program marks a proactive approach to building a sustainable teaching workforce in Garden City, with the potential to significantly impact the quality of education in the district. Applications for the program are set to open soon, with a deadline for submissions to the Kansas State Department of Education by June 1.
