Studio Outside and Mun Harris Architects unveil Mendome Park design project in Plano

The Mendomi Park project in Plano is gearing up to transform a 5.1-acre site into a community-focused green space, and local residents are invited to play a crucial role in shaping its design. During a recent presentation led by landscape architect Sahana Swatunarayana from Studio Outside, the project team emphasized the importance of community input as they embark on the early stages of development.

Located in the far northwest corner of Plano, near the Toyota headquarters, Mendomi Park is currently characterized by rolling hills and a mix of sunny and shaded areas, thanks to its existing tree groves. The design aims to enhance these natural features while introducing new pathways, seating options, and gathering spaces that encourage community interaction and relaxation.

A key aspect of the project is the philosophy behind its name, "Mendomi," which reflects Toyota's workplace values of caring for others like family. This concept will guide the design, prompting residents to envision how the park can foster connections and well-being within the community.

The presentation highlighted several design considerations, including the creation of varied landscapes that offer both open views and intimate spaces. Residents were encouraged to think about how they would like to use the park, whether for leisurely walks, quiet reading spots, or social gatherings. The project team is also exploring the use of native plants to promote biodiversity and reduce maintenance needs.

As the project progresses, a new road will be constructed along the park's boundaries, which may require the removal of some trees. However, the team reassured attendees that many of the trees in question are already in poor health. Toyota Motor North America has generously contributed to the park's development, further solidifying the partnership between the company and the community.

Community feedback is being actively sought through an online survey, which will remain open until May 30. The design team plans to return in early fall with initial concepts based on the input received. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that Mendomi Park becomes a meaningful and valuable resource for all Plano residents, enhancing the city's urban landscape and providing a welcoming space for recreation and relaxation.
