Ocala Police report uptick in crimes alongside successful child abduction and bank robbery arrests

The Ocala City Council meeting on May 6, 2025, focused on public safety updates, including crime statistics and emergency response efforts, as well as community initiatives and a proposed legal settlement.

During the meeting, the police department reported a 12% increase in reported crimes, with 37 incidents compared to 33 from the previous year. The department emphasized that most cases were resolved through proactive policing, resulting in 213 arrests during the period. Field interrogation reports also rose by 20%, indicating increased officer presence on the streets. Traffic stops saw a significant increase, with over 1,100 stops made, reflecting a 23% rise from last year.

Two notable cases were highlighted: a familial child abduction and a bank robbery. In the abduction case, a father took his child from the grandmother at a diner but was apprehended after a coordinated response involving electronic surveillance. The child was safely returned. In the bank robbery, a suspect threatened clerks with a note demanding money. Officers quickly located and arrested the suspect, recovering evidence related to the crime.

Fire Chief Clint Welburn provided an update on the Ocala Fire Rescue Department, reporting a total of 1,394 calls over the past three weeks, including 226 vehicle accidents and three structure fires. The department also engaged in community outreach, visiting schools and participating in local events.

The city attorney presented a proposed settlement regarding an automobile accident involving a city employee, which resulted in serious injuries to an individual. The council approved the settlement, which was deemed beneficial for the city.

Mayor Kent Guinn commended the police department for their efforts in reducing crime rates despite population growth. He also noted improvements in parking for downtown businesses and highlighted the opening of Dignity House, a new community resource aimed at supporting individuals in need.
