Frank Popolizo honored for promoting wrestling in New York and beyond

In a vibrant assembly chamber filled with anticipation, the New York Legislature celebrated the remarkable contributions of Frank Popolizo, a titan in the world of wrestling. Popolizo, inspired by his brother's wrestling journey at Oklahoma State University, founded Journeyman Wrestling in 1999. Through relentless advocacy, he successfully attracted Division 1 coaches to Albany for the Northeast Duels, a premier early-season tournament that has become a staple for top programs.

His commitment to wrestling extends beyond collegiate levels. Popolizo has developed middle and high school programs, organized camps featuring renowned wrestlers, and increased the sport's visibility across the nation. Notable events like the Journeyman Soap Collegiate Classic and Rangel Mania have showcased talent from places as diverse as Lake Placid and New Orleans.

Among his many achievements, Popolizo established the Journeyman Bridal World Classic, the only cadet junior international tournament in the United States, drawing competitors from wrestling powerhouses such as Kazakhstan and Russia. His dedication to the sport also saw him represent Team USA at the Cadet World Championships for three years and orchestrate the historic Tussle of the Troops, the first Division 1 wrestling match held outside North America.

In addition to his administrative and coaching roles, Popolizo has been recognized as New York State Assistant Coach of the Year and was recently awarded the Order of Merit by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his tireless promotion of wrestling.
