Situa High School students excel in American Legion oratorical contest scholarship competition

The Scituate School Committee convened on May 5, 2025, to discuss key updates and initiatives impacting local students and the community. A highlight of the meeting was the recognition of student achievements across various programs, showcasing the school’s commitment to academic and extracurricular excellence.

During the meeting, students reported impressive performances from spring sports teams, including boys and girls lacrosse, track, tennis, and golf, all maintaining winning records. The Unified Track team also kicked off their season successfully. Additionally, the school celebrated its second annual AP breakfast, which saw strong attendance from the 364 students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses, emphasizing the school’s focus on academic rigor.

In a significant move, the committee approved the declaration of surplus items from Wampatuck Elementary School, including outdated desks and equipment, which will be recycled or offered to other districts. This decision reflects ongoing efforts to maintain a safe and conducive learning environment for students.

The meeting also featured a presentation from the history and social studies department, highlighting the successful collaboration with the American Legion for the annual oratorical contest. This year marked the 16th iteration of the event, which encourages students to engage deeply with constitutional topics. Three students were recognized for their outstanding speeches, with scholarships awarded to the winners. Alexa Tracy, who advocated for free speech in book selection, took first place, while Mason Alvarez and Summer Crowley earned second and third places, respectively.

These discussions and decisions underscore the Scituate School Committee's dedication to fostering student achievement and community engagement. As the school year progresses, the committee remains focused on enhancing educational opportunities and supporting student initiatives that prepare them for future challenges.
