Washington County School District showcases innovative curriculum and celebrates educators

The Washington County School District held an open session on May 8, 2025, focusing on various educational initiatives and recognitions within the district. The meeting began with a presentation from Laura Veil, who highlighted the unique offerings of the Utah Online School, which serves approximately 1,000 K-8 students. Veil emphasized that students engage in diverse activities beyond screen time, including hands-on learning with materials such as books, microscopes, and art supplies. She shared success stories of students involved in ballet, acting, competitive biking, and rodeo, showcasing the flexibility of online education to accommodate varied interests.

Veil also discussed recent activities, including a rocket-building event in collaboration with the aeronautics and space committee, and an annual talent show where students showcase their unique skills. The online school also hosts a Halloween parade and a science fair, further enriching the students' educational experience.

Following Veil's presentation, Principal Porter Christensen from Hurricane Intermediate School introduced the school's Positive Behavior Intervention Plan, known as the ROAR program. This initiative rewards students for demonstrating responsibility, open-mindedness, positive attitudes, and respect. Christensen reported that nearly 2,500 positive rewards are distributed monthly, fostering a supportive school environment.

Superintendent Bergeson recognized several achievements within the district, including the designation of four schools as nationally recognized model Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). He also acknowledged the contributions of educators and volunteers, including two Huntsman Award winners and a teacher from Pine View Middle School who will receive the Superstars in Education award.

The meeting concluded with a series of retirement awards, honoring long-serving employees for their dedication to the district. The board expressed gratitude for the commitment of teachers and staff, emphasizing their vital role in the success of students in Washington County.
