Redway Elementary students address local issues including veterans support and drug concerns

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors meeting on May 6 showcased a powerful call for community support, particularly for veterans and youth. Vice President of the local school, Hayes Houston, passionately advocated for the construction of a Veterans Building in Southern Humboldt, emphasizing its importance as a resource hub for veterans and a place to honor their sacrifices. "It's hard for veterans to drive around to places," he stated, highlighting the need for accessible support.

In a shift towards addressing health and wellness, student Mina Dube urged the board to provide free feminine products in schools, arguing that it should not be a financial burden to be a girl. "It shouldn't be more expensive to be a girl," she asserted, pointing out the inconsistency in availability across classrooms.

The meeting also featured students discussing pressing community issues, including drug use and safety concerns. Fifth grader Elena Clark expressed worries about the impact of drug addiction on families and the community, stating, "It feels like it's hard to be safe." Her sentiments echoed the concerns of her peers, who are learning about government and community responsibility.

As the meeting progressed, Supervisor Wilson addressed the audience regarding an upcoming nitrous oxide ordinance, indicating a proactive approach to community health issues. The discussions underscored a collective desire for positive change and support within Humboldt County, with students actively engaging in civic matters and advocating for their needs.
