City Council approves $1.5M Veterans Park Beach revitalization project before rising waters

The St. Clair Shores City Council convened on May 5, 2025, to discuss several key projects and community concerns. The meeting began with a focus on a significant road improvement project, which is set to cost approximately $1.5 million. The city will contribute $73,000, while federal funding will cover the majority of the expenses, amounting to about $1.23 million. The project is classified as a local agency project, meaning the city will oversee construction while adhering to Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) standards. Construction is anticipated to commence in late June, following the conclusion of the school year to minimize disruption.

Next on the agenda was the Veterans Memorial Park Beach revitalization project. Parks Director Rob Spinazzola presented plans to restore the beach area, which involves reestablishing land behind the ordinary high water mark and constructing a new retaining wall. The urgency of the project was emphasized, as rising water levels could hinder reclamation efforts. The council approved the project, with a budget of $69,425 allocated to Landscape Services Inc. The goal is to complete the work before Memorial Day, ensuring the beach area is accessible for the summer season.

The meeting also addressed various community concerns. Council members discussed the need for pothole repairs on Overlake Street ahead of an upcoming food truck festival. The Department of Public Works (DPW) will address these issues promptly. Additionally, residents raised concerns about sidewalk cracking and a feral cat problem in their neighborhoods. The city plans to work with Macomb County Animal Control to manage the cat situation and has scheduled sidewalk repairs for mid-May.

Lastly, updates were provided regarding the Kroger development on 9 Mile Road, where the contractor is currently evaluating the site to ensure it meets Amazon's requirements.
