Gonzales City Council proclaims May 2025 as Poppy Month

The City of Gonzales held a joint City Council and Staff meeting on May 7, 2025, focusing on community engagement and local initiatives. The meeting commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a roll call confirming the presence of Mayor Jose Rios and all council members.

The first significant agenda item was the approval of Proclamation 2025-02, declaring May as Poppy Month. Mayor Rios led the discussion, emphasizing the importance of the poppy as a symbol of sacrifice and remembrance for veterans. The proclamation was unanimously approved, with council members expressing their support. Connie Arellano, the Poppy Chair for the American Legion Auxiliary, was present to accept the proclamation and highlighted the tradition of distributing memorial poppies, which are made by hospitalized veterans and sold to benefit veterans' programs.

Following the proclamation, the Recreation and Community Engagement Department presented updates on their activities and upcoming events for the remainder of 2025. Jessica Olmedo, along with colleagues Isabel Navarro and Julie Douglas, outlined their initiatives aimed at enhancing community involvement and engagement.

The meeting concluded with a positive atmosphere, as council members acknowledged the contributions of the Recreation Department and the significance of the Poppy Month proclamation. The council plans to continue fostering community spirit through various events and programs throughout the year.
