Kootenay County officials promote wildfire preparedness with new emergency resources

PulsePoint is designed to alert users when a cardiac arrest occurs nearby, enabling trained citizens to assist before professional help arrives. This app was praised by Council member Christie, who shared a personal anecdote about witnessing off-duty firefighters responding to a PulsePoint alert last fall. The app's potential to save lives by mobilizing community members in critical situations was a focal point of the discussion.

In addition to cardiac emergencies, the WatchDuty app serves as a wildfire-specific platform, notifying users about local and regional wildfire incidents. This tool is particularly relevant given the increasing concerns about wildfires in the area, especially during dry seasons.

The meeting also addressed the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program implemented by Avista Utilities. This program aims to prevent wildfires by shutting off power in areas where power lines may pose a fire risk. The Chief of the Fire Department provided resources and guidance on how residents can prepare for potential evacuations during wildfire threats. This includes practical tips such as securing pets, closing doors, and removing flammable items from decks.

The Chief emphasized the importance of community preparedness and mentioned that the Kootenai County Office of Emergency Management offers checklists and workshops to help residents understand how to safeguard their homes and families in the event of a wildfire. The department is proactive in engaging with the community, offering to assess properties for wildfire readiness and answering specific questions from residents.
