Tobacco use is set to be banned across all Meeker County properties following a decisive vote at the May 6, 2025, Board of Commissioners meeting. The new ordinance, which amends the existing Parks Ordinance, prohibits all forms of tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, and e-cigarettes, in county parks and other properties.
Commissioner Van Ort led the motion to adopt the amendments, emphasizing the importance of creating a healthier environment for residents and visitors. The ordinance also maintains existing restrictions on alcohol use, which has been prohibited at Lake Manuela Park since 2002.

In addition to the parks, the tobacco-free policy extends to all county-owned, leased, and rented buildings, as well as vehicles. The only exception allows individuals to use tobacco in their private vehicles while on county property. The policy also prohibits county employees and officials from accepting donations from tobacco companies, reinforcing the county's commitment to public health.
To support those looking to quit, the county plans to promote smoking cessation resources provided by their health insurance provider. Signs will be posted at all county facilities to remind visitors of the new rules, and enforcement will be a shared responsibility among staff and officials.
This comprehensive approach reflects Meeker County's dedication to fostering a healthier community and reducing the impact of tobacco use on public spaces.
