Santa Rosa recognizes May as Affordable Housing Month to address housing crisis

During the Santa Rosa City Council meeting on May 6, 2025, a significant proclamation was made declaring May as Affordable Housing Month, highlighting the city's ongoing commitment to addressing the housing crisis. This proclamation comes at a time when many residents struggle to find affordable homes, emphasizing the need for both new developments and the preservation of existing affordable housing.

Council members discussed the importance of affordable housing as a human right and recognized the efforts of the city and the Housing Authority in providing essential support. Notably, the Housing Authority has financed over 6,500 housing units and administered more than 2,000 housing choice vouchers, demonstrating a proactive approach to tackling housing challenges in the community. This fiscal year alone, $3.1 million has been allocated for the development and rehabilitation of 70 affordable housing units.

Lauren Koenig Schoffer from Abode Services shared that the complex is nearing full occupancy and has already welcomed its first resident's baby, symbolizing a new beginning for many families and individuals who were once unhoused.

Omar Lopez from Generation Housing expressed gratitude for the proclamation and the city's recognition of housing as foundational to community health and equity.
