Lowell City Council funds historic preservation projects for local landmarks

The Lowell City Council Finance Subcommittee convened on May 6, 2025, to discuss several key funding requests aimed at enhancing the city’s historic preservation and community development. Among the most notable decisions was the full funding of a window replacement project designed to improve energy efficiency, reflecting the city’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Saint Anne's Church received a recommendation for $256,000 to address significant brick and masonry repairs, highlighting the ongoing need for maintenance of historic structures in the area. The committee also approved a $96,500 request from Farley White Management LLC for essential repairs to the iconic smokestack at the Wanalansett Mills property, a landmark that holds cultural significance for Lowell residents.

Another significant project discussed was the renovation of the former Royal Theater at 484 Merrimack Street, which is set to be transformed into 17 residential units and a retail space for Sofia's Greek Pantry. This redevelopment aims to breathe new life into a long-vacant building, preserving its historical essence while providing much-needed housing and commercial opportunities.

Additionally, a request for $75,000 was recommended for repairs at 32 Bridge Street, which will include updates to windows and masonry. This project is part of a broader effort to maintain the integrity of Lowell’s historic buildings, ensuring they continue to serve the community.
