Fort Lauderdale prepares for hurricane season with comprehensive storm management strategies

City officials in Fort Lauderdale are ramping up preparations for the upcoming hurricane season, which begins June 1, with a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing community safety and stormwater management. During the City Commission Conference Meeting on May 6, 2025, city leaders outlined proactive measures to ensure the city is ready to respond effectively to severe weather events.

Key highlights from the meeting included a detailed presentation on the city's stormwater management system, which features over 10,000 catch basins and 200 miles of drainage pipes. The city’s stormwater team reported conducting nearly 20,000 inspections last year to maintain these critical infrastructures. As part of ongoing improvements, new stormwater pumps have been installed in various neighborhoods, with additional upgrades planned for flood-prone areas.

Emergency management officials emphasized the importance of collaboration with local, county, and state agencies to address flooding concerns, particularly in areas affected by runoff from major roadways and the airport. The city is also deploying a flood sensor network to monitor high-risk intersections, enhancing its ability to respond to flooding in real-time.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, the city is distributing sandbags to residents, with a plan to provide up to 500 bags at designated locations each month leading up to the hurricane season. This initiative aims to assist residents in protecting their properties from potential flooding.

The meeting also highlighted the city’s commitment to community engagement and education. Officials encouraged residents to sign up for emergency alerts and to familiarize themselves with preparedness resources available on the city’s website. A community preparedness event is scheduled for May 31 at the Museum of Discovery and Science, offering residents valuable information on emergency kits and safety measures.
