Coconino County launches new programs for utility assistance and senior meals expansion

Coconino County's recent special session focused on the fiscal year 2026 budget highlighted significant community programs aimed at improving the lives of residents, particularly those facing economic hardships. The meeting, held on May 6, 2025, showcased various initiatives that address pressing needs, including food security, housing assistance, and health services.

One of the standout programs discussed was the county's diaper distribution initiative, which has successfully delivered over 100,000 diapers to more than 655 children since its launch. Currently, the program distributes approximately 16,800 diapers monthly, alongside adult incontinence supplies and period products for qualifying individuals. This expansion reflects a commitment to supporting families beyond traditional poverty thresholds, allowing families earning up to $90,000 to access these essential services.

The board also emphasized the importance of rental and utility assistance programs, particularly in light of potential cuts to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). In the first half of the year alone, Coconino County processed over 325 applications for utility and rental support, amounting to nearly $4.2 million in assistance. The potential loss of LIHEAP funding could severely impact low-income families, making these discussions critical for community welfare.

Additionally, the Meals on Wheels program has seen growth, providing over 20,000 meals to seniors in the past fiscal year. With support from recently approved Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, the program aims to enhance resource navigation for seniors, ensuring they receive necessary services.

The meeting also addressed public health initiatives, including a new portal developed by the state Department of Economic Security to streamline access to various assistance programs. However, it was noted that only 7% of the population could utilize this online resource, highlighting the need for continued support from navigators to assist the remaining 92% of applicants.

In terms of mental health and substance abuse, the county reported a decrease in recidivism rates due to its Pathways to Community program, which has successfully placed individuals into treatment. The program aims to further reduce recidivism by focusing on critical early intervention strategies.

As Coconino County moves forward, the board's commitment to addressing these community needs through targeted funding and innovative programs remains evident. The discussions from this special session underscore the importance of continued support for vulnerable populations and the need for comprehensive strategies to enhance the overall well-being of residents.
