City Council confirms Sun Polymer and MacOwen tax abatements amid traffic concerns

The Mooresville Town Council convened on May 7, 2025, to discuss several key issues impacting the community, including traffic concerns related to new business developments and the approval of tax abatements for local companies.

One of the primary topics of discussion was the approval of a recommendation from the Planning Commission regarding a new business. Council members expressed concerns about potential traffic issues, particularly on Bridge Street, where speeding has been noted. The council acknowledged that while the new business could increase traffic, the current problem seems to stem from existing conditions rather than new customers. A suggestion was made to consider a traffic study in the future if business growth necessitates it.

In addition to traffic discussions, the council reviewed the performance of local businesses benefiting from tax abatements. Sun Polymer, which had received a tax abatement for a $1.5 million investment, reported an actual investment of over $1.6 million and has exceeded its employment goals, now providing 41 jobs instead of the anticipated 25. The council unanimously voted to find Sun Polymer in substantial compliance with the terms of its abatement.

Similarly, MacOwen Real Estate was discussed, with the council noting that while their investment came in under budget at approximately $2.56 million, they have also surpassed employment expectations, creating 49 jobs instead of the projected 33. The council again voted in favor of finding them in substantial compliance.

The meeting also addressed an amendment to the salary ordinance for seasonal clerical work in the clerk's office, adjusting pay rates to reflect experience and performance. This change aims to facilitate the digitization of historical documents, a project that had previously been considered for outsourcing due to budget constraints.
