Payson Council reviews funding for brush pit biofuel collection initiative

During the recent Payson Town Council work study meeting on May 6, 2025, discussions centered on the critical role of the local brush pit in managing biofuel waste and enhancing community safety. Kevin McCully from the Fire Department presented a proposal for a 10% funding increase to support the operations of the Blattner Brush Pit, which has been a vital service for residents since its inception in the early 2000s.

The brush pit collected over 4.6 million pounds of biofuel last season, with 56% of the material coming from Payson residents. This service not only provides an environmentally friendly way to dispose of yard waste but also plays a significant role in fire mitigation efforts in the region. McCully highlighted that the operational costs have risen, necessitating the funding increase to cover expenses such as fuel for equipment.

Frank Aspelsol, the manager of the brush pit, shared insights into the operational challenges faced, including issues with illegal dumping of trash, which has led to costly repairs for equipment. To combat this, the team has implemented measures such as installing cameras and metal detectors to ensure that only appropriate materials are processed.

The council members expressed their support for the brush pit, recognizing its importance in providing a cost-effective service for residents. The brush pit operates on a donation basis, allowing residents to contribute voluntarily, which has proven to be a sustainable model for its continued operation.

In addition to the funding discussion, the meeting touched on the need for ongoing community awareness regarding proper disposal practices. The council emphasized the importance of educating residents about the brush pit's purpose and the consequences of misusing the facility.
