The Marin County Free Library is set to undergo a significant transformation, thanks to the overwhelming support of Measure B, which was approved by 77% of voters in November 2022. During a recent government meeting, library officials unveiled an ambitious five-year plan to enhance all ten branches across the county, with improvements beginning in the fall of 2025.
Lana Edlawin, the director of County Library Services, highlighted that the funding from Measure B will facilitate a range of upgrades, including cosmetic refreshes, safety enhancements, and major infrastructure improvements. The plan is structured in three phases: a refresh of all branches, critical safety upgrades for select locations, and comprehensive capital improvements for four branches, with an estimated investment of nearly $25 million.

The capital improvements will focus on significant infrastructure upgrades, ensuring that libraries can serve the community effectively for years to come.
Community engagement has been a cornerstone of this initiative. Library officials reported receiving over 5,000 comments from patrons, which have directly influenced the design process. Key themes from the feedback include the need for more space for books, comfortable seating, and improved accessibility, particularly for seniors and families.
The meeting also emphasized the library's commitment to creating inclusive spaces that reflect the diverse needs of the community. Projects like the "How We Library" initiative aim to foster a welcoming environment through cultural programming and community outreach.
As the library prepares for these changes, temporary closures of branches will occur, lasting between three to five weeks, but will be staggered to minimize disruption. Library staff will be redeployed to ensure continued service during these periods.
The excitement surrounding these developments reflects a broader recognition of libraries as vital community hubs, evolving beyond traditional roles to become active spaces for learning and engagement. The Marin County Free Library is poised to enhance its offerings significantly, reinforcing its commitment to serve all residents effectively.
