San Gabriel celebrates sixtieth anniversary of historic La Laguna playground

The City Council of San Gabriel convened on May 6, 2025, to address various agenda items, including a significant proclamation for May as Historic Preservation Month. The meeting began with a presentation highlighting La Laguna De San Gabriel, a historic playground located in Vincent Lugo Park. Established in 1965, this playground was designed by the renowned Mexican artist and craftsman Benjamin Dominguez.

Rebecca, a representative from the Friends of La Laguna, shared the playground's journey, noting its nomination to the California Register of Historic Places in February 2009 and its designation as a local landmark by the city. She emphasized the recent restoration efforts funded by Assembly Member Fong and LA County Supervisor Solis, which included enhancements to the playground's iconic lighthouse and octopus structures.

In celebration of the playground's sixtieth anniversary, a "Play Day" event is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, from 11 AM to 2 PM, inviting community members to participate in the festivities. Flyers for the event were made available to attendees.

Following this presentation, the meeting transitioned to public comments, allowing community members to address the council on consent calendar items and other matters within the council's jurisdiction.
