The Belmont-Redwood Shores Elementary School District held an informative session on May 1, 2025, for incoming sixth graders and their families, outlining the structure and offerings of the Ralston Middle School program. With nearly 400 students expected to enroll next year, the meeting aimed to clarify the academic schedule, elective options, and support services available to students.
One of the key highlights was the unique class schedule for sixth graders, which includes seven periods a day, allowing students to experience a diverse range of subjects. Students will attend two periods of language arts, along with social studies, math, science, physical education, and an elective. The elective options include music, academic support, and a rotating "wheel" of classes that introduces students to various subjects. This structure is designed to help students mix and socialize with different peers throughout the day, fostering a sense of community.

Parents were informed that while students may initially be placed in a standard math class, there is flexibility for movement based on performance, emphasizing a growth mindset. This approach allows students to advance to more challenging courses as they demonstrate readiness.
Additionally, the school is introducing a new geometry elective for seventh graders who excel in math, providing an opportunity for deeper learning within the school environment rather than through outside courses. This initiative aims to ensure that students receive a comprehensive education that prepares them for high school.
Support services for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 plans were also discussed. These students will have access to specialized classes and resources to help them succeed academically.
As the school year approaches, families are encouraged to engage with the school staff to clarify any questions regarding the elective selection process, which will take place on May 7. The district is committed to providing a supportive and enriching environment for all students as they transition into middle school.
