Utah water rights officials emphasize need for claims amid public meeting

Residents of the Benjamin Subdivision are urged to prepare for an important deadline regarding water rights claims, as the Water Rights Committee held a crucial meeting on May 7, 2025. During the session, officials emphasized that all water right holders must file a claim by May 22 to maintain their rights, regardless of whether they have previously received a certificate of beneficial use.

The meeting addressed concerns about the implications of potential annexation by neighboring cities, clarifying that water rights remain independent of municipal boundaries. This means that even if properties are annexed, existing water rights will not be affected.

A significant portion of the meeting focused on the process of transitioning from flood irrigation to sprinkler systems. Officials reassured attendees that the amount of beneficial use is what matters most in determining water rights, not the efficiency of the irrigation method.

Participants were also introduced to the state’s online resources, including a user-friendly website where they can access maps, track adjudication progress, and file claims. The website features a water user claim wizard, allowing users to generate claims for their water rights, although they must print and submit these claims physically.
