A significant milestone in Plantation's infrastructure development was announced during the recent Planning and Zoning Board meeting, as officials confirmed the progress of a key transportation project. After overcoming a two-year hiatus, the project is set to advance with the submission of 60% design plans to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) this week.
The project, which focuses on a new access point located 80 feet west of University Drive, has been in the works since a public workshop in December 2021. The selected alternative was favored by the community and was chosen over another option that would have impacted private property.

Subscribe for Free City officials highlighted the challenges faced during the project's environmental review, particularly concerns regarding funding and its inclusion in the Metropolitan Planning Organization's financial plan. However, these issues were resolved, leading to the project's adoption into the 2024 Metropolitan Transportation Plan as a cost-feasible initiative.
Key approvals have been secured, including a significant nod from the Federal Highway Administration to break the limited access line, which is crucial for the project's progression. With the completion of the Project Development and Environment (PD&E) study and the subsequent Location and Design Concept Acceptance (LDCA) achieved in February, the city is now poised to move forward with the next phases of design and permitting.
Looking ahead, the city plans to submit 90% design plans to FDOT by September 2025, with construction anticipated to begin in late February 2026. This project marks a critical step in enhancing Plantation's transportation infrastructure, promising improved access and connectivity for residents.
