DeKalb County officials discuss CNA wages and diversion policy for unhoused individuals

DeKalb County officials are taking significant steps to enhance support for seniors and address homelessness in the community. During the recent PECS Committee meeting on April 3, 2025, the board approved a funding strategy aimed at bridging financial gaps for certified nursing assistants (CNAs) who provide essential services to seniors.

Director Hudson confirmed that the county will utilize reserve funds to cover the interim costs until additional funding from the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) is received after July 1. This approach ensures that the county can maintain its commitment to serving the 207 seniors currently benefiting from these services. The wage range for CNAs has been set between $20 to $30 per hour, reflecting a positive shift towards more competitive compensation in a market facing a shortage of these vital caregivers.

In addition to senior services, the committee discussed a resolution aimed at reforming how the DeKalb County Police Department addresses homelessness. The proposed diversion policy seeks to explore alternatives to arresting unhoused individuals, emphasizing a more compassionate approach to this pressing issue.
