County leaders propose quarter cent sales tax to fund school construction amidst budget challenges

Iredell County officials are grappling with significant budgetary challenges as they prepare for the upcoming fiscal year. During a recent Board of Commissioners meeting, discussions highlighted the urgent need for sustainable funding solutions to address the escalating costs of school construction and the impact of rapid population growth.

County leaders expressed concerns over potential legislative proposals that could strain local budgets and diminish local control. The ongoing growth, particularly shifting from the southern to the central and northern parts of the county, has intensified the demand for educational facilities. The proposed budget for the fiscal year 2025-2026 is set at $343.8 million, maintaining the current tax rate of 50 cents per $100 valuation. The county's unassigned fund balance is projected to be over $112 million, representing 32.58% of the recommended fund balance.
