Fleet Manager Brian Bell outlines budget changes for city vehicle maintenance and upgrades

The Cheyenne City Council's recent work session on the FY 2026 budget for Public Works highlighted significant changes aimed at enhancing the city's fleet management and maintenance operations. Fleet Manager Brian Bell, a dedicated city employee for 27 years, presented key budget adjustments that promise to improve efficiency and service quality.

One of the most notable changes is the increase in the tool allowance for mechanics from $12,000 to $14,400, addressing previous underfunding and ensuring that the 14 fully funded mechanics have the necessary resources. Additionally, the budget allocates $550,000 for a crucial $300,000 upgrade to fuel stations, which will streamline fuel quality control and reduce manual recording errors.

The council also earmarked $250,000 for designing an expansion of the oil lube and tire shop to alleviate overcrowding, reflecting the growing needs of the fleet division. Furthermore, the budget includes $350,000 for replacing an aging service truck and $95,000 for an additional lift, ensuring that the fleet remains operational and up-to-date.

Bell emphasized the importance of keeping the fleet's equipment in top condition, noting that improvements to the site, including paving to prevent vehicle damage from potholes, are also on the horizon. The council discussed the potential for outsourcing certain repairs, particularly for specialized equipment like fire trucks, which may require certified technicians.
