Spruce Academy proposes innovative project-based K-8 school in Colorado Springs

The Colorado Springs School District No. 11 is set to welcome a new educational initiative aimed at enhancing public education access and quality. During the recent Board of Education meeting, representatives from Spruce, a proposed project-based learning K-8 school, presented their vision for transforming education in the district.

Spruce aims to address critical issues such as opportunity gaps and declining enrollment by introducing a unique educational model that emphasizes hands-on learning and community engagement. The school plans to foster academic excellence while nurturing social growth, with a focus on developing essential skills for students. The proposed curriculum will integrate real-world experiences, allowing students to engage in projects that connect classroom learning to their community.

The presentation highlighted Spruce's commitment to inclusivity, aiming to reflect the diverse demographics of District 11. With plans to open in August 2026, Spruce has already garnered significant community support, evidenced by over 600 signatures from local families. The school intends to start with 68 students and expand one grade level each year, ensuring a personalized learning environment with small class sizes.

In addition to Spruce, the meeting also featured a presentation from Gateway for Success, a new charter school focused on supporting at-risk students through alternative education. Gateway aims to improve graduation rates and student engagement by providing tailored support and flexible learning options. The school plans to serve a diverse population, including low-income and underserved students, and has received strong backing from community members and organizations.

Both initiatives reflect a growing commitment within the district to innovate and adapt educational offerings to meet the needs of all students. As these schools prepare to launch, they promise to bring fresh opportunities for learning and growth to the Colorado Springs community, addressing pressing educational challenges and fostering a brighter future for local families.
