Kim Underwood presents Alamogordo Public Library's innovative community services and facilities

The Alamogordo Public Library is evolving into a vibrant community hub, as highlighted during a recent budget hearing by library manager Kim Underwood. With a focus on expanding accessibility and enhancing services, the library aims to meet the diverse needs of Otero County residents.

Underwood emphasized that a modern library is much more than just a collection of books. The introduction of a digital services library card allows residents to access digital resources regardless of any outstanding fines or their residency status. This initiative aims to ensure that all community members can benefit from the library's offerings, which now include 25 new public computers and self-check kiosks for quicker service.

The library is also enhancing its physical space to better serve the community. A newly established teen café provides a welcoming area for young people, while an expanded children's play area and a local art gallery showcase the work of local artists. These changes reflect the library's commitment to fostering creativity and cultural engagement.

In addition to these improvements, the library has launched several innovative programs, including a makerspace for 3D printing and an interactive American Sign Language training platform. These initiatives are designed to equip residents with valuable skills and promote lifelong learning.

The library's outreach efforts have also been noteworthy, with participation in local events such as health fairs and school orientations, which have helped increase patron engagement. Over the past year, the library circulated nearly 200,000 items and welcomed approximately 90,000 visitors, demonstrating its growing role in the community.

As the library continues to adapt and expand its services, it remains dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for Alamogordo residents. With plans for future collaborations and ongoing improvements, the library is poised to become an even more integral part of the community.
