Independent Connection opens new office in Concordia to serve northern Kansas counties

During the Salina City Accessibility Advisory Board meeting on May 1, 2025, representatives from Independent Connection, a center for independent living, highlighted their mission and services aimed at enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities across nine counties in North Central Kansas. With a newly opened office in Concordia, the organization is poised to expand its reach and support for local communities.

Independent Connection operates as a consumer-controlled, community-based nonprofit, ensuring that at least 51% of its staff and board members are individuals with disabilities. This structure emphasizes their commitment to the independent living movement and the empowerment of those they serve. Currently, the organization is in the process of hiring additional staff, aiming to have a total of 14 employees to better assist consumers.

The center provides six core services, all offered free of charge, which include advocacy, information and referrals, peer services, independent living skills training, youth transitions, and support for individuals returning home from institutional settings. These services are designed to cater to a wide range of disabilities, whether they are visible or invisible, and aim to promote independence and access to community resources.

Advocacy efforts focus on integrating individuals with disabilities into the community and influencing policy changes at various levels of government. Information and referral services connect individuals to essential resources, while peer services offer emotional support through individual and group sessions. The independent living skills training is tailored to meet individual needs, whether it involves practical skills like budgeting or navigating public transportation.

Youth transitions are another critical area of focus, as the organization supports young people moving from school to adulthood, ensuring they have the necessary resources and plans for education and employment. Additionally, the returning home service assists individuals in transitioning from nursing homes or treatment facilities back to their own homes, reinforcing their right to live independently.

Beyond these core services, Independent Connection also offers additional support in employment, housing, and community education, including training on disability etiquette and sensitivity. This comprehensive approach underscores the organization's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for all individuals with disabilities.

The discussions at the meeting not only showcased the vital services provided by Independent Connection but also highlighted the ongoing need for community awareness and support for individuals with disabilities.
