Midwest City earns $70K through successful eBay surplus property program

Midwest City officials are celebrating the success of their revamped surplus property program, which has significantly increased revenue for the city. During the recent city council meeting on May 8, 2025, it was reported that the program has generated $70,000 in revenue against expenses of only $48, marking a substantial improvement over previous years.

The city has shifted from traditional in-person sales, which often resulted in losses, to utilizing online platforms like eBay and GovDeals. This transition has allowed Midwest City to sell surplus items, including sanitation and fire trucks, at much higher prices than before. Officials noted that buyers from as far away as California are now willing to pay ten times the amount previously received for these vehicles.

The funds generated from these sales are reinvested into various departments within the city, providing much-needed capital for projects that may not have been budgeted. This innovative approach not only enhances the city’s financial health but also streamlines the disposal of surplus property.

In addition to the surplus program, the meeting touched on other financial matters, including the city’s self-insurance status and the management of inter-service funds.
