The proposed new policy would maintain the definition of immediate family but would allow employees to take bereavement leave without it impacting their sick leave. Instead, employees would receive up to five days of paid bereavement leave at their regular daily rate. Additionally, bereavement days could be taken intermittently within two weeks of the loss.
Board members expressed their support for the proposal, highlighting its significance in showing care for staff during difficult times. Some members suggested considering compensation for those who had previously used sick leave for bereavement, as well as allowing exceptions to the two-week limit in extraordinary circumstances, particularly for military families.
The meeting concluded with a consensus on the importance of the proposed changes, with board members recognizing the need for compassionate policies that support staff during challenging personal events. Further discussions and potential adjustments to the proposal will continue in future meetings.
