Bethlehem School District opens Universal Pre-K registration and announces improvements in Special Education

The BCSD Board of Education convened on May 7, 2025, to discuss several key topics, including updates on pre-kindergarten registration, special education initiatives, and upcoming community events. The meeting began with a reminder that universal pre-kindergarten registration opened on May 1 and will remain open until May 23. Families with eligible preschool children are encouraged to register to participate in a lottery for available seats, with a total of 92 spots expected to be filled in partnership with TSL Adventures and Child Time.

The special education department also provided an update following a recent parent meeting attended by approximately 30 parents. Doug Morrissey, the Director of Special Education, presented an overview of current programs, performance data, and opened the floor for discussion. Key themes from the meeting included appreciation for staff, concerns regarding transitions between educational levels, class sizes, and the need for improved family resources and partnerships with the district. Additional parent meetings are planned to address these concerns.

The board recognized members for their achievements in training and service, with Lauren Grosso receiving a Board Achievement Award and Meredith receiving a Board Mastery Award.

In other highlights, the board acknowledged the successful performance of the middle school play "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and the upcoming BC Green Team-sponsored Bethlehem giveaway, encouraging community participation. It was also noted that this week marks Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, with gratitude expressed for the hard work of educators.

Catherine, a board member, shared her excitement about recent concerts and the success of the multicultural potluck dinner at Ellesmere Elementary, which celebrated diverse cultural backgrounds through food and community engagement. Additionally, John Walston, a member of the board, will be signing his new book at Stuyvesant Plaza.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on the upcoming National Honor Society induction ceremony, which will welcome 73 new members, highlighting the achievements of students within the district. The board then moved on to the public hearing regarding the 2025-2026 budget, providing an overview of the financial planning process and anticipated challenges ahead.
