Los Angeles celebrates Croatian American Heritage Month and European Union Day

During the recent Los Angeles City Council meeting on May 9, 2025, members celebrated cultural diversity and international relations, highlighting the significance of Croatian American Heritage Month and European Union Day.

The meeting commenced with a presentation honoring the organizers of Croatian American Heritage Month, which is being celebrated for the second consecutive year. Council members expressed gratitude for the contributions of the Croatian community to the city, emphasizing the importance of cultural heritage in fostering community ties.

Following this, Council Member Park introduced Consul General Paulina Kapuschenka, marking European Union Day. This occasion served as a platform to reflect on the shared values between Los Angeles and the European Union, such as peace, democracy, and cooperation. Council Member Park noted the historical context of the day, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, which commemorates the defeat of fascism and totalitarianism during World War II. He underscored the EU's role in promoting stability and preventing conflict in Europe since that time.

Park also highlighted Los Angeles' strong relationship with the EU, particularly as the city prepares for significant global events like the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics. He expressed optimism about deepening partnerships with European nations, which contribute to the city's cultural vibrancy and economic strength.

Council Member Padilla added a personal touch to the discussion, recalling his first experience in Europe at the age of 15 and reflecting on the lessons learned from the EU regarding commerce and labor. He emphasized the importance of incorporating labor considerations into trade agreements, drawing parallels between the EU's approach and future negotiations for NAFTA.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the city's commitment to fostering international relationships and celebrating cultural diversity, setting a positive tone for future collaborations and community engagement.
