Apple Valley Council approves $7.8M contract for Kelly Park construction project

The Apple Valley City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing community recreation with the approval of a $7.87 million contract to construct Kelly Park. This decision, made during the council meeting on May 8, 2025, follows a recommendation from the Park and Recreation Committee and is set to transform the park into a vibrant community hub.

The ambitious project, with a total budget of $11.7 million, is scheduled to begin construction in July 2025 and aims for completion by spring 2026, with the park expected to open in June 2026. Key features of the new Kelly Park will include a playground, a performance stage with a 1,900 square foot area, a restroom facility equipped with a universal changing station, and an interactive splash pad. The design also incorporates sustainable elements, such as solar panels and a system to recycle water for irrigation.

In addition to these amenities, the park will feature a 25 by 15-foot video screen for outdoor movies and expanded parking to accommodate visitors. The project has been developed in close collaboration with the Apple Valley Arts Foundation, which hosts the popular "Music in Kelly Park" concert series.

While the council had initially considered adding a dog run and a basketball court to the park's design, budget constraints led to the decision to exclude these features for now. However, council members expressed optimism about the possibility of incorporating them in the future if additional funding becomes available.

The council's approval marks a pivotal moment for Apple Valley, as the new Kelly Park is expected to enhance community engagement and provide a space for recreation and cultural events. As construction progresses, the city plans to keep residents informed about the project and its impact on local activities, ensuring that the community remains engaged throughout the development process.
