A moment of silence marked the start of the Regular Board Meeting on May 7, 2025, as the community paid tribute to two beloved educators who recently passed away: Julie Jackson from the Learning Academy and Cynthia Sims from Butler.
The meeting highlighted the significant contributions of Dave Feliciano, a key member of the superintendent's cabinet, who is retiring after nearly two decades of service. Feliciano has been instrumental in advancing the district's technology and accountability systems, earning heartfelt appreciation from the Board of Education. "You are appreciated," they stated, acknowledging his impact on students, staff, and families.
In a celebration of student achievements, Tyler Elliott, a senior at Windsor Forest High School, was named the Superintendent's Student of the Month for April. Recognized for his leadership and community involvement, Tyler has organized events like the multicultural festival and serves as a positive peer influencer. He will receive various gifts, including a $100 check and copies of his favorite book.
The meeting also celebrated the accomplishments of New Hampstead High School and Woodville Tompkins Technical and Career High School, both awarded the 2024 Single Statewide Accountability Award for significant academic growth. Woodville Tompkins achieved a platinum award, placing in the top 1% of schools statewide.
Additionally, the Board recognized individual student achievements, including Angel Perry from Woodville Tompkins, who excelled in the spring stock market game, and Selena Elaine Hall from Sol C. Johnson High School, who received the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship.
The meeting concluded with updates from the superintendent's professional senate, focusing on budget development and staff feedback on investment priorities. The district is committed to enhancing support in high-need schools and ensuring teachers have protected planning time, with initiatives like "no meet weeks" to reduce interruptions.
As the meeting wrapped up, the community's spirit of collaboration and recognition of excellence in education shone brightly, setting a positive tone for the future.
